Archaeologists frequently recover bones left over from past meals. They identify the animals the bones represent and from these identifications evaluate past diets and environments. Archaeologist Jim Gibb offers this, the first of three, presentations on how to identify and interpret bones. This presentation provides an overview of the kinds of information that can be deduced from bones, drawing on data from 17th- and 18th-century sites in Southern Maryland. Subsequent presentations will introduce attendees to species identification from mammal, bird, and fish bones.
Participants may bring bones they have collected for identification.
